Have been involved with radio most of my life in one form or another: college radio stations, WLKN, WTOS, the Wisdom Radio Network on Sirius Satellite Radio, community radio stations like WOMR, WERU, West Point Community Radio (LP station in PA), Radio For Peace International (community radio on shortwave from Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica), host of Spiritual Awakening Radio via HealthyLife.Net Positive Talk Radio and related podcasts/Youtube/online venues. Nice to be back on community radio and having fun creating music shows again via WXNZ LP FM. Am especially enthusiastic as this is local community radio, not someplace else far far away, but right here in the neighborhood, and where family members have lived going back a few generations in the Skowhegan/Canaan area.

Jan Edwards

My grandmother was a huge influence in getting me into radio. She worked for Musack in the 50s. It was a hoot to hear her give the time while shopping at the grocery store or department store. She was a big influence in my life on many levels.
Late '60s listening to Allison Steel: “The nightbird” on New York FM radio. Applied to go to broadcasting school.

Instead, I moved to Maine as part of the back to the land movement.

Early '80s volunteered at University of Maine Farmington radio for a summer, then met Annie and I interned on her show at WTOS. Worked nights there and made great memories with a great group of people.

Delighted to be back on the air. I play music I like including everything from blues standards, Grateful Dead, Jimmy Buffett, Bluegrass, Bromberg, Big Band, Reggae, and songs from the soundtrack of the '60s like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Traffic.

Andy Wendell

Andy Wendell (WXNZ Program Director, DJ Timewalker, Jazzbeat) grew up listening to radio in Philadelphia and was greatly influenced by some of the DJs and specialty radio shows produced locally and other syndicated shows like Dr. Demento. Andy regularly taped shows to capture some of those favorite radio moments.

Fondness for radio and music grew through the years as he moved to Maine and tuned into radio, Maine style. Since the fall of 1994, Andy has produced a jazz/world/techno show called Jazzbeat as a community member on the Colby College radio station in Waterville, 89.7 FM WMHB. Andy now also brings Jazzbeat to WXNZ for daytime play, Sunday morning jazz, and Monday evenings at 9 p.m.

Starting in the year 2000 and to this day, Andy and his wife, Annie, produce the syndicated radio variety show The General Store Variety Show. The two of them also compose and play music, currently as the driving force behind their vintage and original western music band, Merry-Go-Roundup, and their record label, Welcome Radio.

As if that isn’t enough, Andy’s actual day job is with ClearWater Lab in Newport, Maine, where he is their senior chemist and quality assurance officer. Andy has been in the business of water and wastewater analysis and consulting since 1990. He currently serves on the executive committee of the Maine Water Environment Association (MeWEA) as the Laboratory Committee Chairperson.

Tom Hamilton

I started DJing at UMF on their FM station in 1971, just about the time we first heard WBLM come over the airwaves. We couldn’t believe it! My mother loved music and would often play records on the family RCA console. I remember bringing home Joe Cocker’s rendition of “Bye, Bye, Blackbird” to share with her because I knew she was familiar with the song. I’ve gone from buying 45s and LPs on vinyl, 8-track tapes for my '65 Ford Falcon station wagon, cassettes, CDs, and now digital music.

We bought a farm in Cornville and raised our daughters there. We also bought a Percheron draft horse to get our firewood out of the woods. Then after a few years I decided to work in the woods full time with the horses. I did this for eight years and we bred and raised draft horses as well. I then went back to teaching and finished my career in 2007.

Music has been a huge part of my life and over the years I have enjoyed listening to music and going to live shows. About eight months ago, Annie and Andy invited us to be DJs on this unique station. I can’t sing or play an instrument, but felt I could share the music I love with listeners of Hooskow Radio. Just recently, I became General Manager of the station and hope to move it forward from the wonderful station other people have built from scratch.

Lard

I’m a native of RI. Graduated high school in Mass. Met my wife, Denise, at Unity College in ’85 where I also met Andy. After eight more years in RI, Denise and I moved back to her home state of Maine in ’95 to start a family. I reconnected with Andy and he let me know about the Colby College radio station, WMHB. I was surrounded by music all my life.

I had two older brothers. One a drummer and one a guitar player. Their music influence on me is immeasurable. Later in life the drummer sold drums in RI for 20 years. And the guitarist became a wedding/party DJ. So, needless to say, a radio gig was right up my alley. I ended up doing a prime time Friday night show called Amp Ear, which was billed as a “weekly guide to what was new in the world of Rock, Punk, and Ska.”

I also got very involved with the music direction at WMHB. Acting as year-round Punk director and filling in as the overall MD during the summer and winter breaks. My duties included staying in contact with the record and promotion companies, reviewing and debuting new CDs, and reporting weekly ADDS and Top 30 playlists to CMJ (College Music Journal) magazine. I loved what I did and I did it for 12 full years (1996-2008).

I am thrilled to be back on the air at WXNZ!

Rock on!

Greta

My love for music began when I was very young listening to my grandmother Stella playing honky-tonk piano in the living room of her home. She and my grandfather Ray played in roadhouses throughout Piscataquis County during the '30s and '40s. There was always music at their home. From there my music appreciation expanded to the local radio stations (WKTJ, WTOS, and WBLM). Throughout my college and adult years, live music has been a great pleasure my family and I enjoy.

My experience as a DJ on WXNZ has offered me a new way to share my love of music with the listeners of this station. Thank you for tuning into and supporting this community radio station.

Clay Camero

Clay Camero is proud to live in Anson, Maine, where she writes and records albums with her band, County Line Bandits. Her radio show, Inside Outlaw, features all vinyl cuts from her enormous collection of every genre. Before she moved inland, she lived in Belfast, Maine, and had a radio show on WERU called Inside Outsider Sounds, also an all vinyl/tape showcase. Clay Camero, also known as Caethua, has recorded over eight albums, many pressed to vinyl, some released in other countries, and she has toured across the country in a bunch of strange cool bands since she was 18. Music is her life, and she will testify that music will set you free!

SpinMoll

SpinMoll brings an eclectic mix of the old and new from many genres. My dad esteemed me with the love of music, and 23 years of Californian living expanded my musical tastes. When I moved back to Maine in 2001, I was lucky to DJ at WMHB for a few years. I love what I’m hearing on WXNZ and I'm excited to be part of it—back in the studio spinning sounds.

Cap'n Barney

Born and raised in Winslow (’66 graduate), I spent 26 years in the U.S. Coast Guard on the east coast, west coast, and north coast (Cleveland) with my bride, Linda (a Benton, Maine native), and our two kids. We retired to Maine just in time for the Ice Storm of ’98.  The following spring, Colby College radio station, WMHB, placed a small ad in the local newspaper for volunteer DJs and that was the start of my ongoing DJ ‘career.’

My first show on WMHB was Odd Rock and I played new-alt-indie music with a classic rock/blues feel to it.  After nearly a decade of Odd Rock, I took over as blues music director for the station and have been spinning blues ever since on my new show Mayflower Hill Blues—my youngest brother, Tom, came up with the name of the show.  Colby College is on Mayflower Hill Drive and our Dad used to deliver mail on Mayflower Hill.

It’s all about the music.  I’ve always gravitated towards blues-rock beginning with bands like Cream, Hendrix, the Stones, Zeppelin, AC/DC and Foghat during the 60s and 70s.  After I retired from the Coast Guard, my older brother Bill and I started going to the North Atlantic Blues Festival in Rockland (2001 and ever since) while attending numerous Monday night blues gigs at the Time Out Pub in Rockland.  Ultimately, without blues, there’d be no rock and roll.

Fast-forward to WXNZ.  Well, I love the blues and there’s not enough time in the day to spin and listen to the blues.  So besides my WMHB gig, I’m spinning new blues on HooSkow Radio, WXNZ-LP, and since WXNZ is situated in the old jail, what better name for my show than Jailhouse Blues.  Hey, I'm just keepin’ the blues alive!

Tim

Tim Forsman hosts the shows Jigs, Hoedowns and Songs O' Tragedy.

Earl Boyd

Earl Boyd, aka Jitterbug Jimmy, and his wife Linda, aka MissDemeanor, host the radio show Face the Music which is dedicated to
playing vintage vinyl from as far back as the 1920s and CDs up to present day from their vast collection of musical genres that they would
like to share with listeners.  Their signature closing is "Keep On The Sunny Side!"

They enjoy being involved, along with others at the station, in the development and production of the WXNZ Guest Room.  In addition, they
feel this region is rich with musical and artistic talent and look forward to continuing to introduce those talents to our listening community.  They are very excited and honored to be a part of Hooskow Radio and the community it serves.

Darryll

Darryll White hosts the radio show, The Quarter Hour.

Dave

Dave McDermott is WXNZ's Community and Performance Calendar announcer, a position he thoroughly enjoys. He is new to radio announcing and was introduced to it by DJ's Tom and Peggy Hamilton. The delicate science of editing is a work in progress but with the help of Program Director Andy Wendell, his skills are maturing nicely.
His love of music started at an early age listening to Chicago's WLS radio station. He and his friends taped some of the best 60's music ever made on a reel to reel recorder and replayed it at full volume for hours, to the chagrin of their parents. That love has never wavered and continues today. On a side note, Dave would like to mention that his short stint in a Southside Chicago hooskow was not near as enjoyable as his hours spent in the Hooskow station here in Skowhegan.

Paul

Paul Gregoire hosts the radio show, Mondo Franco.

Fazman

Mike Fazio, aka Fazman, is new to the HooSkow Radio team! He hosts an after-dark show, the Graybar Hotel, on Friday's from 9-11 p.m.
